Kāneʻohe Bay

Kāneʻohe Bay is the largest sheltered body of water in the Hawaiian Islands, roughly eight miles long and protected by Hawai'i's only true barrier reef. Inside the reef the water lays down into miles of turquoise flatwater — including Ahu o Laka, the submerged sandbar that surfaces at low tide and has become a Sunday gathering point for the windward community. For foilers the appeal is geometric: NE trade winds blow over the Ko'olau ridgeline and across the bay, but the barrier reef knocks the ocean swell flat before it ever arrives, so you get steady wind exposure with almost no chop. Launch options include He'eia Kea Pier and Kāneʻohe Bay Beach Park. Pyramid Rock and the Marine Corps Base anchor the southern end of the bay, and that area carries access restrictions — check before you ride near the base waterline. Local etiquette is the headline. The Sandbar is fragile, frequently crowded, and culturally significant; powering up on or near it is poorly received and increasingly regulated. Treat Kāneʻohe as a flatwater paradise that comes with rules — keep speed and motorized use to the deep channels, not the sandbar itself.
