Byfjorden runs roughly 15 km from Bergen city centre out past Askoy to the open Atlantic at Sotra, with the inner fjord almost always flat and the outer reaches exposed to North Sea swell and cleaner westerlies. eFoil riding concentrates on the protected water between Askoy, Holsnoy and the Bergen waterfront, with launches typically from the Marineholmen area or the marinas around Hjellestad in the south. The fjord drops to 200+ m quickly, so depth is never a constraint. The dominant local traffic is the high-speed Hurtigbat passenger services to Sogn and Hardanger plus the Hurtigruten coastal liner — both run on tight schedules and require a wide berth. Bergen's harbour authority (Bergen og Omland Havnevesen) enforces a 5-knot limit inside Vagen and within 50 m of bathing zones throughout the fjord per Norwegian small-craft rules. Bergen records over 200 rain days a year, so check forecasts carefully and accept that summer windows are shorter than further east. June through August offers the best combination of water temperature (16-18 C) and lighter rainfall, with the longest usable days running June 15 to August 1.
